On the morning of the last day of the 2012 London Olympics, Team USA has finally established a firm lead in the medals count.

The Chinese have won 38 gold medals, 27 silver and 22 bronze medals and a total of 87 medals. It appears that the athletics events have pole-vaulted the Americans to the top.

Until now, the two countries have been neck and neck in the medals count, with the Chinese ahead most days.

Behind China is Great Britain with 28 gold medals, 15 silver and 19 bronze medals won. The British have won a total of 62 medals thus far.

The Russians caught up this weekend and have won 21 gold medals, 25 silver and 32 bronze medals for a total of 78 medals won. Korea is far behind in 5th place with 13 gold medals, 7 silver and 7 bronze medals won.
