Italy will go on to face Spain in the Euro 2012 Final on Sunday after defeating the German team last night. Ending the German’s 15-game winning streak, Italy will now face the world and Euro champions with whom they tied 1-1 during the group stage of this year’s Euro.
Italian striker Mario Balotelli fired in two goals during the first half, both within 16 minutes of each other. He caught the Germans standing on their heels and capitalized on the opportunity. Afterward the German team was forced to play catch up and answered back with a goal of its own. Mesut Ozil was able to squeeze off a penalty in extra time, but it was too little too late and Italy held on for the win.
Marking the 8th consecutive defeat of Germany in tournament competition since the two first met 50 years ago, Italy will have to step things up to defeat the title defenders in Kiev, July 1st.
Spain is favored to defend their title against Italy and has the potential to be the first team in history to win three major trophies in succession.
The rematch between Spain and Italy will be a heated one after the two had come to a draw during match play earlier in the tournament. Italy’s passing game has been nothing short of impressive the past few games and they will be a formidable force for Spain to overcome.
Don’t miss the culmination of the Euro 2012 when Spain and Italy meet in the final match on Sunday, July 1st, in Kiev.
