European countries - at least some of them - are operating state monopolies that control the local gambling markets in those areas. This doesn't stand in-line with the European Commission's vision of a free-trade zone in Europe. In order for foreign firms to be able to operate in those markets, free competition must be enacted by law. The European Commission has been debating the subject with various elements and governments in Europe, but it seems that one Danish Member of Parliament has had enough.
Freddy Blak from Denmark is not too happy with the way things are going. The Danish Member of Parliament wants to put an end to the Danske Spil control over the gambling industry in Denmark and Blak doesn't stop with just words. An open letter was sent to Charlie McCreevy, who's the European Union compliance commissioner, urging him to take meaningful action towards Denmark before the European Court of Justice does. Obviously, the European Court of Justice will eventually act in light of the little-to-no progress that the European states are showing. Blak wants to prevent that and calls for Denmark to act alone.
Blak spoke of several key points in the letter. He mentioned that four years have gone by since the European Commission instituted an infringement procedure against the gambling monopoly in Denmark. He also believes that the case against his country is very clear and that there's no reason for the delay in action. Blak wants free competition in Danish gambling market and we hope that his actions will lead to the installment of liberalized laws for gambling and to the support of the Danish government in foreign firms and new online casinos. The competition will benefit both the Danish gambler and the European one.
