Peter Dean, the chairman of the new Gambling Commission does not agree with the statements made by Tessa Jowell, the Culture Secretary for Britain regarding super casinos and the belief that they will create more gambling problems and addictive gambling among casino fans. He claims that she inflated the case for super casinos and other land-based casino sites to push the Bill through Parliament. He stated that her claims were 'an exaggeration' during an exclusive interview with The Times.

'We should not regulate onerously for the sake of being butch. I think that's absolutely unnecessary and inappropriate,' Dean said. To date, there are approximately 300,000 gambling addicts now needing help, according to Britain's only professor in gambling studies, Mark Griffiths. Up to 1,250 million-pound casino slot machines will be introduced to casino fans according to the Gambling Bill, which was passed in May. These slot machines will be placed in the new super casinos which are planned to go up in Britain from 2009.

If a different law amendment will be introduced and passed in Parliament, things could look different for the proposed super casinos. Dean's 'liberal' attitude towards gambling does not seem to be bothered by the potential danger of a growth in problem gambling for those casino fans who already find that they need help. At the moment, the decision is final, but between now and 2009, there is a great deal of time for casino revisions, especially if someone like Ms. Jowell continues to fight this bill.
