Globes Online, the Israeli business publication, reported that a raid took place earlier this week on the offices of Walla! and another private Israeli Internet website. The companies were raided under suspicion of accepting illegal online casino gambling advertisements. The computer crime department of the Israeli Police National Fraud Unit issued and carried out the raid in order to gather evidence and question witnesses and possible suspects. The online casino advertisements were allegedly derived from four different online casinos.
The investigation was spawned by the Attorney General, as well as the State Prosecutor's Office, which ordered the Security Department and Police Investigations to act against advertising for online casino sites, particularly Internet advertising. It was alleged that one of the sites had advertised three online casino sites and that the other private company had advertised one online gambling site.
Online casino advertising has faced a crackdown over the past few months, especially in the UK. Online casino advertising is against the law in Israel, as are online casinos and gambling in general, so this could be considered a serious offense. As of yet, there has been no court date set, and sources are not yet sure of what evidence of online casino advertising, if any, has been found at the scene of the raid.
